4 Top Tips to Choose the Best Breast Implant for You

Deciding on which breast implant you want to have can be an overwhelming and intimidating process. Luckily, there are many factors about your lifestyle, habits, body shape, and more that can make this decision a lot easier.

Tip 1: Determine what type of breast implant is best for you

Choosing which type of breast implant to get may appear to be just as overwhelming as choosing a size, but the truth is, it’s a very simple process.

There are two types of implants; silicone and saline:

  • Saline implants, as the name implies, is an implant filled with salt water. This implant feels a little bit like a water balloon but is overall a great implant.
  • Silicone implants, on the other hand, feels very natural. This type of implant is filled with a gel that has a density and texture similar to breast tissue. Because of this, most patients opt for a silicone implant.

Tip 2: Understand the difference between cup size and implant size

Breast implants are measured by exact volume in cubic centimeters (cc’s), which is different than a cup size. So while a cup size might give you an estimated range of the overall breast size you are trying or able to achieve, it will not be able to fully help you choose a specific breast implant size.

In addition to this, bra cup sizes can vary wildly from retailer to retailer, which makes them even more unreliable. However, a cup size can still point your plastic surgeon in the right direction for the overall look you are going for with your breast augmentation procedure.

Tip 3: Know the profile you want from your breast implants

Whether or not you want your breast implant to look fuller or more natural is based on personal preference. The implant profile affects the projection of your breast implants and will determine how far off your chest your breasts will be. Although they are not directly related to the implant size, the implant profile can affect how large or natural your breasts appear.

Breast implants come in five different profiles:

  1. Low
  2. Low plus
  3. Moderate
  4. Full
  5. Extra full

The greater the profile of your breast implant, the greater the height of your breast side wall. Most patients looking for bigger cleavage aren’t as concerned that their implants look natural, and choose higher, fuller profile implants, as do patients with very narrow breasts.

Tip 4: Consider your lifestyle when choosing breast implants

It’s important to note that implants can suit any lifestyle; that being said, during your consultation, the doctors will walk through your unique routine and habits to help you determine the best implant size, shape, and placement.

If you love an active lifestyle, larger implants might not be the best fit. For example, an avid runner might find larger implants obtrusive.

As Dr. Brown says, “if you’re the type of person that doesn’t want your mother-in-law to know,” going with a lower projected implant could be a better option.
