The Basics of a Washington, DC Labiaplasty
The Consultation

The Procedure
Once you and your doctor have outlined what you want your results to look like, you will discuss which procedure is right for you. You may either move forward with a labia majora or labia minora labiaplasty. The labia majora procedure involves reducing the size and shape of the outer lips of your vagina. The labia minora procedure reduces the size and shape of the inner lips.
In both procedures, these reductions are typically made using the trim technique or the wedge technique. During the trim technique, the plastic surgeon removes excess skin around the outer edge of the labia. During the wedge technique, a v-shaped “wedge” is cut out of the labia at the widest point then the edges are stitched together. Your doctor will determine which technique is best for you during your consultation.
A labiaplasty may take as little as 45 minutes to an hour. While many patients elect to undergo general anesthesia for extra comfort, it is also possible to perform the procedure using a local anesthetic if this is your preference.
The Recovery
Recovery from labiaplasties are considered minimal, but it is recommended to hold off on any significant or strenuous lower body exercise for several weeks. This procedure involves delicate tissues that require being well cared for during the healing process. Healing may take up to 4 to 6 weeks. At-home remedies like ice packs, elevation, and OTC or prescribed medications will help with the discomfort and pain.
