4 Top Tips to Choose the Best Breast Implant for You

Deciding on which breast implant you want to have can be an overwhelming and intimidating process. Luckily, there are many factors about your lifestyle, habits, body shape, and more that can make this decision a lot easier.

Tip 1: Determine what type of breast implant is best for you
Breast implants before and after

Choosing which type of breast implant to get may appear to be just as overwhelming as choosing a size, but the truth is, it’s a very simple process.

There are two types of implants; silicone and saline:

  • Saline implants, as the name implies, is an implant filled with salt water. This implant feels a little bit like a water balloon but is overall a great implant.
  • Silicone implants, on the other hand, feels very natural. This type of implant is filled with a gel that has a density and texture similar to breast tissue. Because of this, most patients opt for a silicone implant.

Tip 2: Understand the difference between cup size and implant size

Breast implants are measured by exact volume in cubic centimeters (cc’s), which is different than a cup size. So while a cup size might give you an estimated range of the overall breast size you are trying or able to achieve, it will not be able to fully help you choose a specific breast implant size.

In addition to this, bra cup sizes can vary wildly from retailer to retailer, which makes them even more unreliable. However, a cup size can still point your plastic surgeon in the right direction for the overall look you are going for with your breast augmentation procedure.

Tip 3: Know the profile you want from your breast implants

Whether or not you want your breast implant to look fuller or more natural is based on personal preference. The implant profile affects the projection of your breast implants and will determine how far off your chest your breasts will be. Although they are not directly related to the implant size, the implant profile can affect how large or natural your breasts appear.

Breast implants come in five different profiles:

  1. Low
  2. Low plus
  3. Moderate
  4. Full
  5. Extra full

The greater the profile of your breast implant, the greater the height of your breast side wall. Most patients looking for bigger cleavage aren’t as concerned that their implants look natural, and choose higher, fuller profile implants, as do patients with very narrow breasts.

Tip 4: Consider your lifestyle when choosing breast implants

It’s important to note that implants can suit any lifestyle; that being said, during your consultation, the doctors will walk through your unique routine and habits to help you determine the best implant size, shape, and placement.

If you love an active lifestyle, larger implants might not be the best fit. For example, an avid runner might find larger implants obtrusive.

As Dr. Brown says, “if you’re the type of person that doesn’t want your mother-in-law to know,” going with a lower projected implant could be a better option.

Breast Augmentation: Before & After, Procedure, and Recovery

Are you considering increasing the size of your breasts through breast implants or fat grafting? Breast augmentation is a very common plastic surgery procedure chosen by thousands of women each year. The procedure can help improve the symmetry of the breasts, increase size, increase volume, and help a woman achieve the breasts she’s been dreaming of.

About the breast augmentation procedure

Before undergoing your procedure we’ll determine whether an implant or fat-grafting is right for you. The different options are:

  • Fat GraftingThis can be done to achieve a fuller look with a careful injection of fat. In this procedure, fat is injected through very small cannulas leaving minimal evidence of the procedure.
  • Saline Breast Implants: For saline implants, the shell is filled with saline to your desired volume, increasing the shape and size of your breasts with a firmer feel.
  • Silicone Breast Implants: For silicone implants, the implant shell is filled to your desired volume. This type of implant offers a more natural feel.
  • Ideal Breast Implants: Ideal Implants are saline implants that provide a natural feel and youthful look without using silicone gel. Ideal Implants use a series of implant shells nested together and two separate chambers that hold the saline.

During your consultation, we’ll discuss your cosmetic surgery goals and each option as they relate to your goals. For some patients, we even add an additional procedure to achieve their goals. For example, a breast lift or even a tummy tuck can be added so that your recovery time is combined and you can achieve all your goals at one time.

Breast Lift Before & After: What You Can Expect

Are you one of the many women whose breasts have begun to sag over time due to aging, weight loss, and pregnancy? Over time, breasts lose their elasticity and can begin to sag leaving them looking deflated and you feeling less than confident in your own skin. If you’re unhappy with the appearance of your breasts and ready to make a permanent change, a breast lift might be the right option for you.

Breast Lift in DCThe breast lift procedure explained

The breast lift procedure is meant to enhance your breasts’ shape by giving them a more youthful and perky appearance. In this procedure, incisions are made to the breasts in order to lift the breast and improve the overall contour. After the incisions have been made, the underlying breast tissue is lifted and reshaped, the nipple and areola are repositioned, and any excess breast skin is removed. There are a few ways the procedure can be performed:

  • Anchor: 3 basic incisions, one around the areola, one vertical to the breast crease, and one horizontal along the breast crease
  • Lollipop: 2 basic incisions, one around the areola and one vertical to the breast crease
  • Periareolar: 1 incision around the areola
  • Crescent: 1 along the top half of the areola

This procedure is meant to lift the breasts, but many patients are curious about adding breast volume or even reducing volume. During your consultation with our experienced plastic surgeons, we’ll go through your goals with you to help determine if you’re a good candidate for a lift as well as any additional procedure such as breast augmentation.

The typical breast lift surgery takes roughly 2-3 hours to perform and the recovery, which varies from patient to patient, averages 1-2 weeks.

4 Things To Know Before Getting Breast Implants

Breast Implants DCIf you’re one of the many women considering breast implants, there are a few things to know before deciding on the procedure.

The 4 things to know about breast implants

  1. Not all implants are the same– Some implants can give you a fuller look, others can offer more projection, and some offer a natural look. At Bruno | Brown we offer ideal implants, silicone, and saline. Each implant has its own set of benefits which we can discuss during your consultation.
  2. You can combine the procedure with others– Many of our patients choose to combine their breast implant procedure with other procedures such as a breast lift or tummy tuck. Combining procedures can also mean that your recovery time is combined and you can reach your overall goals quicker.
  3. Scarring can be minimal and practically invisible– Each patient heals differently, but our doctors are extremely conscious about incision placement so your scarring is minimal, and for some patients completely unnoticeable once fully recovered.
  4. There are other options to enlarge your breasts without implants– Some patients aren’t sure that they want to commit to getting implants, in that case, a fat-grafting breast augmentation might be right for you. In this procedure, we can remove fat from other areas of your body and place it in your breast to enlarge it using your own fat.

What we’ll go over during your breast implant consultation

When Is the Best Time to Get a Breast Augmentation?

Breast Implants in DCSo you’ve read articles, looked at before/after photos, and begun to research doctors but you may still be wondering, what is the best time to get a breast augmentation?

Ideal timing for your breast augmentation procedure

  • You’re near your ideal body weight– We recommend that our patients are near their ideal body weight as weight loss and weight gain can have a large impact on the appearance of your breasts. We always want our patients to be happy with their results for years to come and to ensure long-term success, it’s best to maintain a relatively steady weight.

Pregnancy and its after-effects can drastically change your breast’s appearance. We can discuss this during your consultation as our recommendation can vary from patient to patient.

We’ll talk you through the procedure and ensure it’s right for your specific goals prior to moving forward. The procedure can drastically change your appearance and we want to ensure it’s in line with your desired look.
  • You have a week or two to recover– As with any surgery, there is a recovery period that should be taken seriously. Some patients need longer to properly recover than others but we always recommend you take your time easing back into your daily routine. This is something we’ll discuss prior to surgery so you can properly prepare for your recovery period.
