Am I a Candidate for Cheek Augmentation?

Washington DC cheek augmentation surgeonAmong other things, the aging process can leave your cheeks hollow, giving you a tired and worn out appearance. Even if you have never had the high cheekbones and full cheeks, cheek augmentation can give you a better contour and a more pleasing appearance.

Choosing a Rhinoplasty Plastic Surgeon

When you are looking for a plastic surgeon in the Washington DC area, your choices can seem overwhelming. It is important to neither become discouraged by your options, nor to choose the first plastic surgeon you stumble across. Your surgeon will play a direct role in your comfort, safety, and ultimate aesthetic results.

When you are looking for a rhinoplasty surgeon, you should keep in mind that this procedure requires both skill and experience. Your nose is one of your most prominent features. If you choose to have it altered, you deserve someone who can correct its imperfections and bring it into ideal proportions with the rest of your face.

Your rhinoplasty surgeon should be board-certified and have hospital privileges. Not only should he have hospital privileges, your plastic surgery procedure should be performed in an accredited facility with attending medical staff.

Your plastic surgeon should also be able to provide you with pictures of his rhinoplasty results. If he does not have a rhinoplasty before and after gallery, ask for pictures during your initial consultation.

Your consultation is incredibly important. This meeting gives you an opportunity to ask questions about your procedure and to gauge your comfort with a plastic surgeon’s skills, staff, and experience.  You should feel free to meet with as many plastic surgeons as necessary to find the one you feel is best for you.

If you live in or around Washington DC, Chevy Chase, Fairfax, or Arlington and are looking for a rhinoplasty surgeon, please contact Chevy Chase Plastic Surgery using the form at the right side of the page or call (877) 427-7888 today to schedule an initial consultation.

New Study Finds Plastic Surgery Makes You More Likeable

Most people who undergo plastic surgery do so to improve their appearance and feel better about themselves. But did you know the benefits of your procedure can go far beyond the way you view yourself? A new study suggests that undergoing plastic surgery can also impact the way others perceive your personality.

According to this study, published earlier this month in the journal JAMA Facial Plastic Surgery, people rated women who had undergone facial rejuvenation procedures as being more attractive, likeable, feminine, and having better social skills than women who hadn’t undergone any plastic surgery.

The study evaluated the responses of 173 people – 63 men and 110 women – who viewed photos of 30 women who had undergone facial plastic surgery procedures. The before-and-after photos were mixed in different groupings to avoid a comparison bias. Overall, the study found that the “after” photos received higher rankings for social skills, likeability, attractiveness, and femininity.

These findings most likely occurred due to the fact that our faces convey certain personality traits to others, even if we’re not intending to do so. By altering your physical appearance, you can also alter the way people’s brains perceive your personality. While it may be an unintended benefit of your plastic surgery procedure, it’s nonetheless a very powerful one that can help you in all of your personal and professional interactions.

2014 Cosmetic Procedures Up 3% from Previous Year

The U.S. economy continues to recover, and one sign of better financial times is an increase in cosmetic procedures performed in 2014. The American Society of Plastic Surgeons recently released the 2014 statistics on cosmetic procedures, and their report indicated that the number of total procedures rose 3% from the previous year.

Interestingly, one of the procedures experiencing the greatest surge in popularity was buttock augmentation. All three of the most popular buttock augmentation techniques were performed more frequently than they were in 2013. In 2014:

  • 11,505 buttock augmentations with fat grafting were performed (up 15%)
  • 3,500 buttock lifts were performed (up 44%)
  • 1,800 buttock implant procedures were performed (up 98%)

In addition, male plastic surgery procedures continued their recent trend of increasing popularity. The most common procedures performed on men were:

  • Pectoral implants (1,054 procedures in 2014)
  • Male breast reduction to correct gynecomastia (26,000 procedures performed in 2014)

Minimally invasive facial rejuvenation procedures continue to be extremely popular. Overall, 15.6 million minimally invasive procedures were performed in 2014. The top 5 most popular nonsurgical treatments were:

  • BOTOX® Cosmetic (6.7 million procedures)
  • Dermal fillers (2.3 million procedures)
  • Chemical peels (1.2 million procedures)
  • Laser hair removal (1.1 million procedures)
  • Microdermabrasion (882,000 procedures)

While buttock augmentation procedures and nonsurgical treatments experienced a sharp increase last year, many of the most popular plastic surgery procedures saw a decline in numbers in 2014. Only liposuction experienced an increase, up 5% from 2013. The other four most popular plastic surgery procedures saw a slight drop in numbers last year:

As the economy continues to improve in 2015, it’s likely that the number of cosmetic procedures will continue to gradually rise. At Chevy Chase Plastic Surgery, we offer a wide range of surgical and minimally invasive, nonsurgical treatment options to help you look and feel your best. Am I a Candidate for a Breast Lift?

breast lift candidacy Washington DC - Chevy Chase Plastic SurgeryOver time, your breasts will undergo certain changes. This is typically caused by a variety of factors including gravity, the aging process, fluctuations in weight, and pregnancy. Often, these changes can result in sagging and stretching of your breasts. Fortunately, there are several breast surgery options to restore a more youthful breast appearance.

The breast lift is the most common procedure performed to help you achieve perkier, more youthful looking breasts. This procedure will lift your breasts and reposition the nipple to help you achieve your desired look.

Ideal breast lift candidates are in good general health, would like to correct sagging issues, and have realistic expectations for the outcome of the procedure. Both women with large and small breasts can achieve excellent breast lift results; however, women with smaller breasts may experience longer lasting results.

If you’re planning on getting pregnant in the future, you may want to consider postponing your procedure until you’re done having children since future pregnancies and breastfeeding can negatively impact your results. During your consultation, you should discuss any pregnancy plans with Dr. Bruno and Dr. Brown.

In some instance, Dr. Bruno and Dr. Brown may also recommend breast augmentation in conjunction with a breast lift for enhanced results.

Will Breast Augmentation Impact Future Mammogram Results?

Many women who are considering breast augmentation are concerned that the procedure will impact their future mammogram results. This is a valid concern and not something that that should be taken lightly.

In fact, both saline and silicone breast implants can potentially impact the effectiveness of mammogram results, making it more difficult to detect signs of breast cancer. That being said, there are numerous studies that demonstrate mammograms are still fairly useful for women who have undergone breast augmentation.

The following tips will help you make sure your mammogram is as effective as possible after breast augmentation:

  • Work with a clinic where the radiologists have extensive experience performing mammograms on women with breast implants
  • Inform the clinic that you have breast implants when you book the appointment and remind them when you arrive for your mammogram
  • If you notice changes in your breast, notify your doctor at once to determine whether additional imaging services are necessary

Ultimately, mammograms remain an effective tool to detect breast cancer in their earliest stages for women with breast implants. If you follow the tips listed above, you shouldn't worry about your breast augmentation adversely impacting your mammogram results.

BOTOX Breast Lift: Effective Treatment or Just another Trendy Gimmick?

A new treatment called the "BOTOX breast lift" has garnered a great deal of publicity recently, making it one of the trendier new topics in the world of plastic surgery. This procedure uses BOTOX® Cosmetic injections to create perkier, fuller breasts.

When BOTOX® Cosmetic is injected into the breasts, your pectoral muscles relax. As a result, your shoulder muscles must do all the "heavy lifting" in the chest region. The end result, marketers claim, is a breast lift without the need for extensive plastic surgery.

While the idea of a nonsurgical breast lift seems appealing, it is important to ask whether this procedure will actually achieve the aesthetic goals of women who desire a breast lift. After reviewing this procedure, Dr. Bruno and Dr. Brown have concluded that it's simply not worth the money.

Breast lift candidates have excess saggy skin and drooping issues that can't be addressed without plastic surgery. In addition, the results achieved by BOTOX® Cosmetic are temporary, so you would need to go for follow-up treatments every 6 months.

Most importantly, there are serious risks associated with injecting BOTOX® Cosmetic into your breasts. If the injection location was slightly off or if the BOTOX® Cosmetic migrated out of the breast region, it could impact your ability to rotate your arms. If the injection went too deep, it could puncture the lung. These risks just aren't worth it when you consider that the results aren't very dramatic or long lasting.

At Chevy Chase Plastic Surgery, we prefer to avoid offering trendy marketing gimmicks like the BOTOX breast lift. Instead, we focus on treatments that are clinically proven to be safe and effective in order to help you achieve the beautiful, natural looking results you deserve.

If you are interested in finding out whether a surgical breast lift is right for you, please contact Chevy Chase Plastic Surgery today to schedule a consultation. We serve patients throughout the Washington DC metropolitan area.

Am I a Candidate for a Facelift?

Your face is one of the first areas to show signs of aging. Unfortunately, these signs of aging can give you a tired or worn out appearance, making you look older than you feel. If this is the case, you may want to consider a facelift.

A facelift is one of the most effective ways to reverse the signs of aging and revitalize your facial appearance. However, this procedure isn't right for everyone. It's important to determine whether you are a good candidate before moving forward with your facelift procedure.

Ideal facelift candidates:

  • Are in good general health
  • Have realistic expectations for the outcome of the procedure
  • Have sagging facial tissue
  • Have good skin elasticity
  • Have excess loose skin in the face or neck
  • Have well-defined bone structure to support the surgical alterations made during your facelift
  • Want high quality, long term results instead of a short term quick-fix
  • Don't smoke or is willing to quit through the duration of the procedure
  • Don't have any health conditions that may increase risks
  • Are willing to commit the time required, including recovery time, for extensive plastic surgery

During your initial consultation, Dr. Bruno and Dr. Brown will evaluate your facial features and listen carefully to your goals in order to determine if a facelift is right for you at this time. If so, they will work with you to devise a customized treatment plan that will address your unique aesthetic goals.

To find out if a facelift is right for you, please contact Chevy Chase Plastic Surgery today to schedule a consultation. We serve patients in the Washington DC area.

What Procedures are Part of a Mommy Makeover?

Have you heard about a mommy makeover? While motherhood is certainly a joy, the physical toll it takes on the body can be significant. From pregnancy to breastfeeding, becoming a mother may result in changes to the appearance of your body, and it is often difficult to regain your pre-pregancy figure with diet and exercise alone. Fortunately, a mommy makeover can help you get your body back.

A mommy makeover is a specially selected and coordinated combination of procedures that are designed to meet the aesthetic needs of new mothers. While each mommy makeover is custom-tailored just for you, a typical makeover might include a combination of the following:

Perhaps your abdominal muscles aren’t as tight as they used to be. Or maybe pregnancy and breastfeeding have caused your breasts to lose some of their youthful vitality. And then there are the stretch marks. A well-designed mommy makeover can address all of these issues and more.

Full Tummy Tuck vs. Mini Tummy Tuck

Mini Tummy Tuck vs Full Tummy Tuck: How to Choose What’s Right for You

It’s not an exaggeration to say that most of us want a flat midsection. But for many, diet and exercise aren’t quite enough to produce the look we want. Add in pregnancy and other factors, and achieving a toned tummy might seem out of reach. But abdominoplasty, or a “tummy tuck,” can help flatten and firm your appearance.

There are actually two kinds of tummy tucks: the full tummy tuck and the mini tummy tuck. Both are excellent body contouring options for those looking for a flatter midsection, but there are a few key differences to understand.

A mini tummy tuck addresses the area below the belly button and is an excellent option for those with excess fat and skin on the lower abdomen. Because it focuses exclusively on the lower abdominal region, it’s less invasive, and scarring is minimized. Many patients who aren’t good candidates for a full tummy tuck find that a mini tummy tuck works for them. And, it is more affordable, to boot.

A full tummy tuck tightens the entire abdominal region. It is by nature more invasive than the mini tummy tuck, but it can address a much larger area. Excess fat and skin above the belly button can successfully be removed with a full tummy tuck, while a mini tuck can’t improve that area.

If you’re ready to discover how today’s tummy tucks can give you that firm, toned look you’ve always wanted, please contact Chevy Chase Plastic Surgery today to arrange a consultation. We serve patients in the Washington DC area.
