Breast augmentation (sometimes called a “boob job” or “breast aug”) is a cosmetic surgery that targets reshaping and enlarging your breasts using implants or fat grafting. Patients who opt for breast augmentation often look for fuller and rounder breasts. The surgery can help restore your breasts after pregnancy or improve overall volume and shape.

Understanding precisely what you are getting into when it comes to getting a breast augmentation is very important to us at Bruno | Brown Plastic Surgery, but hearing all this information from a doctor can sometimes be even more stressful!

To Help You Prepare for Your Breast Augmentation, Here is a Recovery Timeline:
After you get a breast augmentation, you will be sore, have some bruising, and maybe have drains. Before getting a breast augmentation, the recovery timeline is essential so that you can take the necessary precautions.
Right after surgery: You might wake up groggy and a little disoriented. Not quite sore yet, but within the next few hours, you will feel more tender as the anesthetic wears off.
Your first two weeks:You are going to be sore. You should be able to do light activity but not high-intensity exercise or heavy lifting. You should be able to start driving a few days after surgery, as long as it is not too uncomfortable. Taking it easy for the first two weeks is essential to your recovery from surgery.
2 to 4 weeks post-surgery: You will probably have a post-surgery consultation during this time. You should be able to start doing more medium-intensity activity (as long as your doctor approves it). Often for people, the 3rd and 4th week of recovery is when they can return to their regular workout routine.
4 to 6 weeks post surgery: Your scars should be healing, and you should have a full range of motion back. As long as your doctor has approved you, you should be able to live your life normally!
At Bruno | Brown Plastic Surgery, our experienced and knowledgeable team can help you achieve your desired look. With our two award-winning plastic surgeons, your breast augmentation will be perfectly planned out for you.
Breast augmentation is a popular cosmetic surgery that can help improve your confidence and enhance your figure. However, the recovery process can be overwhelming for many patients. In this article, Dr. Brown, a trusted Washington, DC plastic surgeon, answers some of the most common breast augmentation recovery FAQs.
The recovery process varies for each patient, but most patients can return to light activity within 2 weeks after surgery. Consult with your doctor to ensure you are free and clear before resuming your normal routine.
Heavy exercise or chest exercise should be avoided for 3 to 4 weeks after surgery.
You should be able to do light lifting and light activity 2 to 3 weeks after your surgery. This means you should be able to return to your everyday workout routine about 3 to 4 weeks after your surgery.
Make sure you discuss this with your doctor before starting back up with your workout routine.
3. Will I have breast implant scars?
Yes, breast implant scars are common because small incisions must be made to insert the implants. Most surgeons place the scars in inconspicuous areas to make them less visible.
4. When can I drive after my breast augmentation surgery?
Most patients are able to resume driving a few days after surgery, but it’s important to pay attention to any discomfort while sitting up and driving. As a rule of thumb, if it hurts, don’t do it or be extra careful.
5. When can I sleep on my side after breast augmentation?
According to Dr. Brown, you can sleep on your side a day or two after the surgery. However, if you are a person who sleeps flat on their stomach, you will have to wait at least 2 weeks (or more, depending on what your surgeon says).

At Bruno | Brown Plastic Surgery, we’re passionate about helping women feel confident and beautiful in their own skin. Recently, we had the pleasure of working with a former NFL cheerleader who wanted to enhance her figure with breast implants and a breast lift.
Meet Dominick Fink, former NFL cheerleader, career woman, mom, and all-around girl boss. Ready to follow her breast implant revision and breast lift experience?
After five and a half years of being unhappy with her current breast augmentation, former NFL cheerleader Dominick Fink decided it was time to change that.
Disclaimer: This video contains some graphic images of surgery.
Dominick contacted a former teammate when looking for the perfect plastic surgeon to perform her breast augmentation. Her old Redskins teammate, Jordan, raved about her results from Bruno | Brown Plastic Surgery, and Dominick knew this was the best option.
She already had saline breast implants from her first breast augmentation that she had done five and a half years ago. She felt as though they were too big for her and was looking for something a little more natural.
“I went through a process where I kinda gained a little bit of weight. Got comfortable with myself. And I just, I don’t know… I kinda want to take it down a little bit and just maybe be a little more proportional.”
Overall, she wanted to come across as more proportional and smaller-chested.
Dominick’s breast lift and breast implant exchange consultations:
Before her surgery, Dominick had two consultations: first, to meet the doctors, and second, a pre-surgery consultation to discuss the final details of the surgery. In these consultations, Dr. Bruno and Dr. Brown covered:
In this breast augmentation, Dominick did not need drains after her surgery. Drains are often used for more invasive surgeries and can help remove excess liquid instead of forcing the body to absorb that liquid. Drains are discussed in both the pre-surgery consultation and the post-surgery consultation when needed.
A few weeks post-surgery, we took the time to interview Dominick on her how she felt and her breast augmentation recovery.
Q: How do you feel post-procedure?
A: “I was expecting to be really groggy. I was expecting to be really tired. But I got right back into the car and I was aware of my surroundings, I was good, I felt good. A couple days after I was a little uncomfortable. Just a little mild discomfort but it wasn’t anything too serious. But now I mean I feel great, I’m able to move my arms. I’m super happy with everything and I love the results.”
Q: Did you have any swelling or bruising?
A: “There really wasn’t anything too significant. Of course, the normal scaring around the area, but really there was no bruising.”
Q: How long was it until you felt able to accomplish tasks?
A: “It was about a week, um, until I felt really comfortable moving my arms. Now like I said, I am free to move my arms, and I’m back in the dance studio dancing again. But, I would probably say it was about a week, week and a half until I was back up… you know, lifting my son up and doing those normal household chores.”
Q: What was the most surprising aspect of the procedure?
A: “I think the most surprising… having had the surgery or a surgery before, I was very nervous about the swelling aspect of it. When I came out of my first surgery, I was super, super swollen, but now I feel comfortable. I think they look great. I feel like I could be back to, you know, my normal bra size or my regular bra size. I think the swelling aspect was what I was really nervous about, but it wasn’t anything too significant.”
Q: What was your healing time and process like?
A: “Healing Time, I was really nervous. I thought I was going to be out and down for, you know, ‘x’ amount of months, but… like I said, I am back in the dance studio, I am moving, and I am ready to work out again. I feel great. I feel like I can get back in the gym and do everything that I did before.”
Q: What were your follow-up consultations like?
A: “Follow-ups were absolutely fantastic. When I originally had my first surgery… I went for my consult, I got my surgery, and that was really it. But with Dr. Bruno and Dr. Brown, everyone has been so fantastic. I’ve come in, I’ve had multiple appointments afterward to check on me, to see how I’m feeling, I’ve had emails, I’ve had calls… this whole experience with Dr. Bruno and Dr. Brown has been absolutely incredible. And something I would honestly recommend to anyone and everyone who is looking to have a surgery done. It’s just been fantastic.”
Breast augmentation before and after results
Dominick’s results turned out better than she could have ever wanted, and she had a smoother recovery than she was expecting. See her amazing results for yourself!
Bruno | Brown Plastic Surgery is one of the top-rated practices for breast augmentations in Washington, DC. We understand getting surgery can be stressful, and we are here to help.
A breast augmentation, sometimes referred to as a “breast aug” or “boob job” by patients, involves using breast implants or fat transfer to increase the size of your breasts. Breast augmentation surgery helps to reshape and resize the breasts to create the patient’s desired look.
Build confidence– Breast augmentation surgery allows you to reshape your appearance. Every woman has those swimsuit insecurities; breast augmentation helps to make sure you fill out that bikini the way you want to so you can feel confident and comfortable in your skin.
Enhanced breast size– Sometimes, your breast size doesn’t reflect the rest of your body. A Washington, DC, breast augmentation surgery can help improve the size of your breasts to the level you would like.
Uneven breasts– Breast asymmetry is extremely common for women of all ages. In fact, over half of all women have breast asymmetry. Through breast augmentation, we can make it so that your breasts are symmetrical.
Breast augmentation options:
Saline implants: A silicone shell that is filled to increase the size and shape of your breasts.
Silicone implants: A thicker option and a more natural-looking silicone shell filled to the desired volume.
Ideal implants: Using multiple implant shells together and two separate chambers that hold saline, giving a more natural feel and youthful look.
Fat grafting: Using liposuction to transfer fat from other parts of the body to the breasts, giving a fuller look.
What to expect during your breast augmentation surgery:
Consultation: Sit down with your doctors and discuss surgery. This is where you determine the size and shape and how the surgery will take place. The consultation is the most crucial step; even if you have the most qualified doctors, discussing your desired results and understanding the surgery process and what to expect are key.
Pre-Surgery: Before the surgery, your surgeon will do a complete health assessment to ensure you and your body can handle the surgery. After this, they will walk you through the surgery and recovery.
Post-Surgery: After the surgery is finished, you will be discharged. The surgeons will discuss recovery times (they differ depending on the person) and the best way to take care of your new breasts.
If you have more questions about breast augmentations, check out this video of Dr. Brown walking through some of our most-asked questions about breast implants.
Deciding on which breast implant you want to have can be an overwhelming and intimidating process. Luckily, there are many factors about your lifestyle, habits, body shape, and more that can make this decision a lot easier.
Saline implants, as the name implies, is an implant filled with salt water. This implant feels a little bit like a water balloon but is overall a great implant.
Silicone implants, on the other hand, feels very natural. This type of implant is filled with a gel that has a density and texture similar to breast tissue. Because of this, most patients opt for a silicone implant.
Tip 2: Understand the difference between cup size and implant size
Breast implants are measured by exact volume in cubic centimeters (cc’s), which is different than a cup size. So while a cup size might give you an estimated range of the overall breast size you are trying or able to achieve, it will not be able to fully help you choose a specific breast implant size.
In addition to this, bra cup sizes can vary wildly from retailer to retailer, which makes them even more unreliable. However, a cup size can still point your plastic surgeon in the right direction for the overall look you are going for with your breast augmentation procedure.
Whether or not you want your breast implant to look fuller or more natural is based on personal preference. The implant profile affects the projection of your breast implants and will determine how far off your chest your breasts will be. Although they are not directly related to the implant size, the implant profile can affect how large or natural your breasts appear.
Breast implants come in five different profiles:
Low
Low plus
Moderate
Full
Extra full
The greater the profile of your breast implant, the greater the height of your breast side wall. Most patients looking for bigger cleavage aren’t as concerned that their implants look natural, and choose higher, fuller profile implants, as do patients with very narrow breasts.
Tip 4: Consider your lifestyle when choosing breast implants
It’s important to note that implants can suit any lifestyle; that being said, during your consultation, the doctors will walk through your unique routine and habits to help you determine the best implant size, shape, and placement.
If you love an active lifestyle, larger implants might not be the best fit. For example, an avid runner might find larger implants obtrusive.
As Dr. Brown says, “if you’re the type of person that doesn’t want your mother-in-law to know,” going with a lower projected implant could be a better option.

From your initial consultation until your healing process ends, Bruno | Brown Plastic Surgery is here to help you with your Washington, DC breast augmentation surgery every step of the way.
Consultation: Having a consultation before undergoing breast augmentation surgery is crucial to getting the results that you want. Our board-certified DC plastic surgeons are specialists in ensuring that patients achieve their desired appearance goals in a safe manner. A consultation can also help you, and your doctors chose which procedure is ultimately the right choice for you and your body.
Preparing for the Procedure: In preparation for the DC breast augmentation procedure, your doctor will conduct a comprehensive health assessment, prepare and explain to you the procedure and post-procedure care, and answer any questions you may have before going into surgery.
After the Procedure: Following the procedure, patients are discharged. Discharge occurs on the same day as the breast augmentation procedure was conducted because the recovery period of this surgery requires rest to recuperate. Based on your specific surgery needs, your DC area plastic surgeon will discuss specific post-procedure steps to follow.
How Long Does a Breast Augmentation Take and What is the Recovery Period Like?
Typically, a breast augmentation procedure usually takes between 1-2 hours, and there is no overnight hospital stay required. Additionally, the recovery period for surgery can take between 1-2 weeks. However, everyone’s needs and surgical care can vary.
One question we frequently get is, “What size implants do I need?”.
The first thing that is crucial for our Washington, DC breast augmentation candidates to consider when choosing a breast implant size is that bra cup sizes vary wildly, and these measurements aren’t an exact science.
In fact, breast implants are measured by exact volume in cubic centimeters (cc’s), so while a cup size might provide an estimate of the breast size you are trying to achieve, it will not help you choose an exact breast implant size. Depending on the size of the bra band, 125-150cc will increase the volume of the breast by one cup size.
Saline vs Silicone Breast Implants
There is a slight difference in available sizes for silicone and saline breast implants, but in general, implant volumes range from about 120cc to 800cc. In addition to lifestyle and aesthetics, it is also important to keep in mind your skin elasticity. This way, if you are prone to stretch marks, your augmentation results won’t put more stress than necessary on the skin.
In addition to different volume sizes, breast implants also come in five different profile projections:
Low
Low plus
Moderate
Full
Extra full
The implant profile affects the projection of your breast implants because, although they are not directly related to the implant size, they can affect how large or natural your breasts appear.
Best Breast Augmentation Surgeons in Washington, DC
I did a lot of research, and had multiple consults before ultimately choosing to move forward with my breast augmentation with Dr. Bruno. Of the multiple plastic surgeons I vetted, Bruno/Brown was by far the most articulate, thorough, professional and kind clinics. With any plastic surgery/operation, there is always a level of anxiety, because it is a big life decision, but they were able to put me at ease throughout the entire process. Their follow through has been equally impressive – Dr. Bruno called me the evening of my surgery to check on me, and his office called me the following morning to check on me as well. I cannot say enough good things about them, and would recommend them 10X over. – Ashley S., Google Review

Types of Breast Surgeries, DC
There are various types of breast augmentation or other breast surgeries you can consider. We offer a variety of services/surgical procedures that can help you narrow down your desired path.
We provide procedures such as:
Breast Augmentations with Fat Grafting
If you want to increase the size and or shape of your breasts without an implant, you may want to consider breast augmentation with fat grafting. You can feel more confident in your breasts and remove any unwanted or undesired fat from other areas of your body.
Breast Lift
If you have ever heard of a mastopexy, it means you have also heard of its more common name, Breast Lift. A breast lift will lift and enhance your breasts for a more youthful and perkier appearance. If you are feeling that over time your breasts have changed, you can consider a breast lift to combat that feeling.
Breast Reduction
Oversized breasts can create many problems in your everyday life. Things like simple tasks can even become difficult if you are left with pain or extraneous weight. Finding clothing that fits, completing household chores, and even exercising can become a difficult task.
This is why individuals may consider breast reductions or a reduction mammoplasty. This can help release pain and or discomfort you may have to your breast size, reducing the weight.
Many women that have overly large breasts can have neck and back pain, accompanied by self-confidence issues. We aim to work with you to understand how breast reduction surgery can improve your life and confidence.
Male Breast Reduction (Gynecomastia)
Male breast reductions, known as Gynecomastias, allow for reduced breast size and chest contour enhancement. Around 40-60% of men are affected by larger male breasts. Gynecomastias may help you look trimmer and more youthful.
Our physicians understand that your body image, self-confidence, and quality of life are deeply rooted in your appearance. In your consultation, your doctor will work with you to determine the best way to achieve your desired appearance.
Breast Reconstruction
After enduring breast cancer and losing one and or both of one’s breasts, survivors deserve a normal pre-diagnosis life. Breast reconstruction aims to help women reclaim their femininity by restoring or replacing one’s breasts.
During the experience of breast cancer, some women may undergo a mastectomy, double-mastectomy, or lumpectomy. This can result in losing one and or both breasts. Our doctors will work with you to understand and assist in how breast reconstruction can restore your quality of life and help you feel more confident, once again.

When getting a breast augmentation you want the best of the best taking care of you. Our board-certified plastic surgeons will be with you from start to finish and help you pick the best implant for your lifestyle.
There are two types of breast implants to choose from and it really just depends on your preference.
Silicone – Silicone breast implants are just as they sound, made of silicone gel. These implants flow within its shell a little differently than saline but still offers a natural and vivacious look. One big difference is that patients must be over the age of 22 to be offered the option of silicone implants for a breast augmentation as stated by the FDA.
Saline – Saline is sterile saltwater and these implants are available to anyone over the age of 18. This procedure is slightly different though, with saline implants the empty shell is inserted into the breast and then once in, it is filled to the desired size with saline fluid. These implants are more likely to be felt or seen when under very thin skin.
When it comes to which implant you should choose, it is really up to personal preference as long as you are over the age of 22 so you have both options. However, when it comes to size that’s a different story. Size depends on what look you’re going for, your body size, shape, breast fullness, and what will be ideal for your health as well.
During your breast augmentation consultation, we’ll discuss your specific goals for your breast implants, and figure out what type of implant may be right for you. We’ll also go through what you can expect during your recove=ry and be there to support you every step of the way. Our award-winning physicians are highly trained and perform technically advanced procedures to achieve the best possible results for our patients.
