The breast augmentation procedure is incredibly common and chances are you know someone who has undergone the procedure. There are several reasons patients opt for a breast augmentation and whether you’re looking to make a slight or significant change we can talk through your options in your consultation.
You want larger breasts– Perhaps the most common reason, many patients wish to achieve larger breasts through an augmentation.
Your breasts are asymmetrical– Many women have asymmetrical breasts with varying severity. A breast augmentation can give you the symmetrical breasts you desire.
You want your breasts to match your body– Some women are born with naturally smaller breasts and may simply want their breasts to match the rest of their body. A breast augmentation can be used to make your breast slightly larger, much larger, or simply offer your body more balanced proportions.
You want more breast volume– After pregnancy, weight loss, or aging you may notice your breasts aren’t as full as they once were. A breast augmentation can help you achieve the full and voluptuous chest you once had.
If one or more of these reasons applies to you and you want to learn more about your breast augmentation options, give us a call to schedule a consultation.
Our plastic surgeons are highly trained and perform technically advanced procedures to help patients achieve their goals. During your consultation, we’ll walk through the different types of implants as well as fat-grafting breast augmentation options. We’ll help you determine the procedure that’s best for you and answer any questions you have along the way.
While breast augmentation is one of the most common plastic surgery procedures, there are many things you may not know about the procedure. If you’re considering breast implants, here are a few things you should know.
Not all implants are made equal– We offer 3 different types of implants, saline, silicone, and ideal. Each implant can give you a different look and feel so it’s important to consider your specific goals when choosing an implant.
Breast implants can improve your breast shape– Many people assume that breast implants are simply to increase the size of your breasts, but what you may not know is that breast implants can be used to improve their overall shape and symmetry. Some patients come to us, not necessarily looking for a large increase in size, they simply want to give their breasts a rounder shape and improve the symmetry of their breasts.
You should not be pregnant or nursing when you undergo the procedure– It is unsafe to perform a breast augmentation on a pregnant woman. Furthermore, even after pregnancy, a woman who is breastfeeding should not undergo the procedure. Following breastfeeding your breast size can change rapidly, making it hard to truly gauge the size implant needed.
You can combine other procedures with breast implants to achieve your goals– Many of our patients come to us with more than one goal in mind. Whether you’re looking to add a breast lift, a tummy tuck, liposuction, or butt lift we can work with you to find the right combination of procedures to achieve your goals.
You can still get mammograms with breast implants– A common question we’ve heard is “Can I get mammograms with breast implants?” The answer is yes. Breast implants can withstand the activity of a mammogram and we highly recommend receiving a yearly mammogram beyond the age of 40.
We pride ourselves on achieving the best possible result for our patients. We’ll listen to your goals in your consultation and evaluate your specific case before coming up with a plan to achieve your breast goals. We perform technically advanced procedures to achieve excellent results, but also keep your health and safety top of mind. We’re here to answer any questions you have prior to and following the procedure to ensure it’s right for you and you’re completely satisfied with your results.
The breast augmentation procedure is an incredibly common plastic surgery procedure. Hundreds of thousands of women choose to undergo the procedure each year. But if you’re considering a breast augmentation, there are preparations and considerations you should make beforehand.
Before a consultation with a plastic surgeon you should prepare for the conversation and consider the following:
Your goals– Your doctor will want to discuss your goals for the procedure. Not all breast augmentations are the same and your doctor can tailor the procedure to your specific goals.
Type of augmentation– We use three different types of implants, each with their own set of benefits, and we also perform breast augmentation with fat grafting. Depending on a variety of factors we can help you choose the procedure that’s right for you.
How the procedure can benefit you– The procedure can increase the size of your breasts, improve volume and cleavage, and boost your overall confidence. You’ll want to consider if the benefits line up with what you want to achieve.
Our highly trained doctors are committed to producing the best possible results for our patients through technically advanced procedures. We take the time to listen to your goals, get to know your lifestyle, and what you’re hoping to achieve through the procedure. Through our initial consultation, we can get a better idea of what implant would work for you, or if fat grafting may be the best option. We walk you through what to expect from beginning to end so you feel fully prepared going into your procedure. We’ll support you the entire way and will do everything we can to ensure your result is what you want.

There are several reasons people choose to undergo plastic surgery. Whether it be to improve self-confidence, correct disproportions, or any other personal reason, it can be a rewarding experience.
Alicia chose to have the surgery following a weight gain that left her breasts disproportionate. This was not a decision made lightly and something she gave serious thought, but ultimately decided was right for her saying “I wanted to even out the size of my breasts, and I also opted to go a bit larger.”
She does say that “if you’re considering plastic surgery, you should do it for you and only you.” Adding that “if you believe that undergoing a cosmetic procedure will improve your self-esteem and self-confidence, then by all means: go for it.”
When choosing a plastic surgeon, you might not know where to start, especially if it’s your first procedure. Alicia researched long and hard before deciding to work with our team saying “I read dozens of reviews online and in local magazines, and I ensured that the surgeons were board-certified and asked the doctors about their experience with breast augmentation. If you’re thinking about getting any type of cosmetic procedure done, make sure to ask your doctor(s) how many years of experience they have, how they trained for the procedure, and how many times they’ve performed said procedure.”
Our team works with patients to ensure they know what the procedure entails and are ready to help you through the entire process. Alicia described her own experience saying “I had three pre-op office visits before the surgery and was able to get a feel for the staff and the office environment, and I loved how friendly and helpful everyone was. I also loved that the doctors and staff were always available to answer any questions I had. I felt like they prepared me very well for the surgery, and I knew what to expect. After the surgery, both doctors were on call to assist in any way necessary. I had my surgery right before Memorial Day Weekend, and both doctors called to check in on me throughout the weekend — even though it was a holiday. I called them at 8:30 AM on a Saturday since I had a question about medication, and I was able to get an instant response. I was shocked!”
Many patients ask for guidance on the right size and/or type of implant for them. We aim to advise you on the best option for you, but you do have the chance to see what your implants may look like with different sizes.
Of Alicia’s own experience she said, “with the help of Dr. Bruno and Dr. Brown, I decided to get a 250cc implant on the left, and a 220cc implant on the right to even out the size of my breasts. I also opted for a silicone implant based on their recommendation. I went from a 34C to a 34DD.” She went on to describe the process of testing out different sizes: “I was able to try on a bra with the implants in the office to get an idea of what size I preferred. I knew I wanted relatively small implants, but I tried a range of sizes. It was great to try on the bra and know exactly what size I’d end up with!”
The recovery process
We explain the recovery process to our patients beforehand, so they know what to expect. But when the unexpected arises, we are here to answer your questions.
Every recovery is unique, but Alicia found little to no issues with hers. As far as her recovery went, she said “Day two, I needed to take some medication to help with the discomfort. I wouldn’t say that I was in a ton of pain; my body was adjusting to the extra weight in front. The doctors told me to remove the surgical bra and wrap the second day and get into an underwire bra. I had to wear an underwire bra around the clock for a few days, and I was pretty swollen for the week after surgery. After four days, I was able to walk around normally and without any issues.”
One of the most sought-after trends right now, according to the American Society of Plastic Surgeons, is the ‘side boob’. To achieve this look, the expert surgeons at Bruno | Brown Plastic Surgery recommend enhancing your breasts with breast augmentation in DC.
About the phenomenon that is ‘side boob’
Side boob is exactly what it sounds like and is revealed when the side of your breasts show in your clothing. You’ve probably seen celebs posting in dresses, swimsuits and other pieces of clothing donning the side boob. Dubbed “the new cleavage”, many women want them to show subtly from their clothing, but it might not always be naturally achievable.
The most direct way to achieve this look is to undergo breast enhancement surgery.
Breast enhancement, or breast augmentation, is a popular procedure that can completely reshape and resize the appearance of your breasts.
The doctors at Bruno | Brown Plastic Surgery will work with you to determine how to best achieve your desired look.
You have various different ways we can achieve the results you desire for your breast augmentation:
Saline implants: A silicone shell is filled to your preferred volume, increasing the shape and size of your breasts
Silicone implants: A silicone shell is filled to the desired volume and offers a more natural look
Fat grafting: Uses liposuction to transfer fat from other parts of the body to the breasts, giving a fuller look
Ideal Implants: Ideal Implants were approved by the FDA in 2014 after 10 years in development. They provide a natural feel and youthful look without using silicone gel by using a series of implant shells nested together and two separate chambers that hold the saline.
Each implant type has unique benefits and results so the best way to determine which will work best for you is to consult the doctors on your overall appearance goals.
Data released in May by RealSelf, a leading consumer review site on cosmetic treatments, shows more people are getting cosmetic procedures as part of their wedding preparation, with wedding-related reviews up 30 percent in 2019.
Breast Augmentation Shares Number 1 Spot of Most Viewed Surgical Treatments in Preparation of Weddings
Breast implants and rhinoplasty share the number one spot, accounting for 14% of all wedding related reviews over the last 12 months. According to the magazine, breast augmentation ranked number one in 2018 as well.
“Cosmetic interventions are real medical procedures that require serious thought and consideration,” said RealSelf chief medical officer Dr. Lara Devgan. “While a major life event such as a wedding might motivate a patient to move forward with a procedure, that individual has likely been contemplating and researching for months or even years leading up to that point.”
The first step is to set up a consultation with one of our experienced plastic surgeons. During the consultation, you and the doctor will review your overall goals and discuss both implant size and projection. It is important to consider the overall size you’re looking to achieve.
Our goal is to look at your implant procedure in a holistic way by considering the following:
Your body size and type
Desired appearance goals
Overall lifestyle that could be impacted by the procedure
It is crucial that you choose a doctor that makes you feel confident asking questions, ensuring you make an informed choice and your expectations are met. Our physicians will discuss your goals and will work closely with you to ensure that your breast implant procedure is best for your needs and lifestyle.
Drs. Bruno and Brown are often asked how to choose the best breast implant size by their DC breast augmentation patients.
The first thing that is important for our DC breast augmentation patients to consider when choosing a breast implant size is to understand that bra cup sizes vary wildly from retailer to retailer and are not an exact measurement of breast size.
Breast implants are measured by exact volume in cubic centimeters (cc’s), so while a cup size might give you a ballpark range of the overall breast size you are trying to achieve, they will not help you choose an exact breast implant size.
Try to put the idea of C cup and D cup out of your mind while you consider your options. Also, remember that your natural breast tissues will contribute to the overall size of your breasts after implants have been placed provided your implants are not part of a breast reconstruction procedure.
Breast Implant Sizes
A great place to start your journey to understanding breast implant sizes is with the types of breast augmentation.
There are two main ways we achieve the breast augmentation results you desire:
Implant Augmentation (Silicone, Saline, and IDEAL)
There is a slight variation in size availability for saline and silicone breast implants, however, in general, breast implant volumes range from about 120cc to 800cc. In choosing a breast implant size, it also helps to remember that your skin must stretch to accommodate the implants you choose, so if you have poor skin elasticity or are prone to stretch marks, your cosmetic results may be best if you choose implants that will not put undue stress on your skin.
Breast Implant Profiles
In addition to different volumes, breast implants also come in five different profiles: low, low plus, moderate, full and extra full projections. The implant profile affects the projection of your breast implants, and although they are not directly related to the implant size, they can affect how large or natural your breasts appear. The greater the profile of your breast implant, the greater the height of your breast side wall.
Many patients who desire more upper pole fullness, or cleavage, and are less concerned that their implants look natural choose higher, fuller profile implants, as do patients with very narrow breasts.
Tools to Help You Choose a Breast Implant Size
There are many tools Bruno|Brown can provide you with to help you visualize how different breast implant sizes would look after surgery.
Although none of them offer an exact representation, they can still give you a general idea of the look and proportions implants would create.
Implant sizing is helpful to some patients as they struggle to imagine how they would look with larger breasts. Our sizing kit allows us to determine the overall desired volume and an approximation of how you will look after surgery. We do our sizing with a personal fitted t-shirt to see a general idea of the effect breast implants would have.
A measuring tape can also be a great help. Having your surgeon take measurements of your chest wall dimensions will help you get a better understanding of your existing body proportions and how they would change with different breast implants. Your surgeon will provide you with appropriate context and a brief anatomy lesson during this stage of the decision-making process.
One of the best resources available to patients choosing a breast implant size is their surgeon’s gallery of breast augmentation before and after photos. Looking at before and after photos of other patients who share a similar build, existing breast size and desired breast size can provide some of the most useful direction to women considering implants. Review as many before and after photos as possible as you make your decision.
