May is for Moms: Get a Mommy Makeover!

Looking for a way to treat yourself or your mom this Mother’s Day? Consider a mommy makeover, the gift that will never be forgotten.

What is a Mommy Makeover?Mommy Makeover Plastic Surgery DC

A mommy makeover is a combination of surgical procedures tailored to your specific goals. It is particularly popular among mothers, hence the name because it works well to correct issues related to childbirth and breastfeeding. A mommy makeover works to restore your body to its form before motherhood, often in ways that diet and exercise aren’t able to.

What Procedures Can be Included in a Mommy Makeover?

Typically, a mommy makeover includes a combination of:

  • Tummy Tuck– reshapes the appearance of your abdomen by removing excess fat and tissue around the waistline and stomach
  • Liposuction– through careful, targeted suction, excess fat is completely and permanently removed from your trouble spots
  • Breast Enhancement– reshapes and resizes the appearance of your breasts
  • Breast Lift– reduces the appearance of aging on sagging, droopy breasts to restore a youthful, perky chest

One of the main benefits is that you are undergoing multiple procedures in one sitting, making it more efficient and shortening your recovery time. The procedure itself only takes 3-5 hours with a recovery time of as little as 2 weeks. While many patients elect to have an overnight hospital stay for comfort, it is not required. The procedure is unique in that Drs. Bruno and Brown will work with you to tailor the procedure to your individual circumstances. Read more about the procedure and the importance of choosing a board-certified plastic surgeon, such as Drs. Bruno or Brown, with the American Society of Plastic Surgeons, a leading organization in the field of plastic surgery.

Patient Newsletter Addressing the Link Between Breast Implants and A Rare Form of Cancer

Breast augmentation and reconstruction are two of the most popular plastic procedures among women. With growing concerns about a link between breast implants a rare form of cancer, Bruno | Brown Plastic Surgery released this patient newsletter:

As a patient in the practice of Bruno | Brown Plastic Surgery, we feel it necessary to inform you of recent issues with breast implants. Many of you have now seen or read recent media reports referencing the possible link between breast implants and a rare form of cancer called BIA-ALCL (Breast Implant Associated-Anaplastic Large Cell Lymphoma). While this is occurring in an extremely small subset of patients with breast implants, there appears to be some link.

BIA-ALCL is not a breast cancer, but a rare T-cell lymphoma that usually develops as a fluid and swelling around the textured shell breast implant. According to the ASPS and the FDA, thus far, there have been no confirmed cases of BIA-ALCL in women who have had only smooth-shell breast implants. The lifetime risk for this disease appears to be about 1 case for every 30,000 textured implants placed. This equates to a 0.003 percent risk. Both the FDA (Food and Drug Administration) and ASPS (American Society of Plastic Surgeons) and others are gathering more and more data on this rare disease.

The FDA is not recommending removal of textured implants nor have they advised against their placement. Rather, the FDA recommends, as do we, that every woman conducts regular self-examinations. If you develop swelling or a lump in your breast, contact our office right away. We will comprehensively evaluate you and order the appropriate tests to determine if any treatment is indicated.

While more information is being gathered, we at Bruno | Brown Plastic surgery have elected to stop the use of textured implants from all breast manufacturers until further research on this type of implant is more complete. If you are concerned that you may have this textured type of implant or have any concerns about your implants, please call the office at 301-215-5955.

7 Steps to Having Younger, Healthier Looking Eyes

7 steps to younger eyesIf eyes are the window to anything, it’s our age. From the purely cosmetic to minimally invasive treatments to surgical procedures, here are 7 steps to maintain younger looking eyes:

  1. Full brow lift:Is your forehead sagging? Are your eyebrows heavy? Rejuvenate the overall appearance of your skin by tightening the forehead and reducing the appearance of worry lines giving your facial features a more youthful appearance.
  2. Blepharoplasty (Eyelid Surgery): Do your eyelids droop, giving you an aged effect? Smooth the skin surrounding your eye by lifting the upper or lower eyelid. In this procedure, excess tissue is removed from the eyelid areas for a more youthful look and brightness.
  3. Your Arch Enemy: Aging brows age your entire face! Go for the anti-aging quick fix and get them in shape. Trim, tone and fill for a youthful appearance. If they are thinning, use brow powder to fill in patchy spots. Use a brow pencil to lengthen and color those gray hairs and disappearing tails. The difference will amaze you.
  4. Latisse: As you age your once lush lashes become shorter and sparser. Get long, thick, younger-you-but-better lashes back with Latisse, available here!
  5. Botox: Feel more mademoiselle but looking more madam? Smooth away those crow’s feet with Botox! As board certified surgeons, Drs Bruno and Brown are qualified to determine the best methods to achieve your desired results.
  6. PRP Injections: Had a long day (or month) at work? Nothing gives us away more than under eye bags. Fear not! PRP Injections or Fillers are ready to ride to the rescue. PRP is an injectable treatment that uses your body’s own blood, similar to a blood test, to reverse the signs of aging, restore or enhance facial volume, and improve skin texture and tone.
  7. Fillers: Fillers are an excellent way to get rid of under eye hollows that appear as you age. Fillers restore volume and rejuvenate the area under your eyes and upper cheek.

SculpSure vs CoolSculpting: Which Non-Surgical Body Sculpting Procedure Is Right For Me?

Bruno | Brown introduces SculpSure to our DC area office, a minimally invasive procedure that can be done in less than 30 minutes.

With so many procedures, how can we choose? Dr. Bruno answers our most common questions SculpSure.

Q: Does it hurt during the SculpSure treatment?

A:

There may be a mild sensation of the area being treated, but there is no pain. Patients are fully awake for the treatment, and it takes less than 30 minutes to have an area treated.

Q: Are the results permanent?
A:

Yes, results are permanent as long as one maintains a reasonable range of body weight, healthy living with good dietary selections and an active lifestyle.

Q: How much weight can I expect to lose?
A:

According to the official SculpSure website, each 25-minute procedure can destroy up to 24% of targetted fat cells. It’s important to note that SculpSure, along with any other fat removal treatments (liposuction, Smartlipo, Coolsculpting), are not meant for weight loss but rather shaping and refining problem areas where fat deposits. Combined with a healthy lifestyle, good dietary selections, and an active lifestyle, one would expect some weight reduction.

Q: What areas can I target with SculpSure?
A:

Many areas are amenable to treatment.  The most common are the abdomen, hips, flanks and thighs.

Q: Are there side effects for either CoolSculpt or SculpSure?
A:

Both treatments are non-invasive methods of fat reduction.  It is not uncommon for patients to have bruising and itchiness after Coolsculpting. There may be some hypersensitivity of the area treated for a short time after the SculpSure, but patients will be able to go about their daily routine.

Q: What are the primary differences between SculpSure and CoolSculpt treatments?
A:

SculpSure uses topical laser treatment to reduce the underlying fat whereas Coolsculpting freezes the fat.  The treatment time is much shorter for Sculpture, only 25 minutes. CoolSculpting takes an hour per treatment. Another difference between the two procedures is the possible side effects. After SculpSure, patients may experience a slight tenderness. After, CoolSculpt patients have reported tenderness, slight bruising and itchiness.
